SAVINGS TIPS | HOME

The start of the New Year presents us with the promise of new beginnings. There's no better time than right now to make the most of 2010 and get a fresh start with your finances. Here are some helpful tips for saving around the home and while shopping.

  1. EATING. One of the easiest ways to save on the expense of food is to plan your meals for the week, do the shopping and then stick to the plan, and you can still enjoy dining out once in a while.

  2. CLEANING. One use cleaning wipes are quite popular, but they are expensive. Use cloth or paper towel and the cleaner of your choice and save money.

  3. ELECTRICITY. The cost of utilities is constantly rising. Use fewer lights for fewer hours per day and develop the habit of turning lights out when you leave a room. Also, you can switch from 100 watt to 75 watt light bulbs and have an impact on your energy bill.

There are literally 1000's of ways to save money around the house, but you only have to put a handful of them into action to see the difference.

SAVINGS TIPS | SHOPPING

We've all experienced going shopping to grab a few things and we walk away from the register with a receipt for several hundred dollars and a shopping cart full of goods. Here are a couple of tips to help the next time you go shopping.

  1. GROCERIES. Plan your weekly budget then make a list of necessary items and shop for only those things on the list. Avoid the trap of impulse buying. Try not to go shopping on an empty stomach and leave the kids at home if possible.

  2. ONLINE. Shopping online can be a great way to save money. You still have to do a little hunting for the best deals and be sure to take advantage of savings coupons.

  3. JUNK MAIL. It's not always junk. Take 2 minutes and scan the flyers and store specials for sales, special offers and coupons. For the effort it takes, the savings can add up at the end of a month.

As with most things, the better informed you are the better off. Talk to family, friends and co-workers: you never know who might have a great tip on saving a little more of your money.

 HRTC & You

You have up to and including January 31st, 2010 to receive a 15% tax credit on eligible home renovation expenditures. Some basics on the HRTC:

  • This is a temporary tax credit, expiring on January 31st 2010.
  • The tax credit applies to expenditures over $1,000, up to $10,000.
  • The maximum tax credit amount is $1,350 per family ($9,000 x 15%).
  • Eligible goods acquired prior to Jan. 31st, 2010, even if they are installed after Feb. 1st, 2010, will still qualify.
There is still time to take advantage of this tax incentive and with most home renovations you can actually improve the value of your property.

For more information visit, http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca, and click on the HRTC link in the middle of the page.
