Back it Up
With the holiday season upon us, there'll be plenty of photo opportunities and more than one occasion that you'll want to record. It might be a long overdue family get-together or your child's first Christmas concert.
Memories like these are precious and they're something that we want to enjoy later. No matter what the event is or the motivation for capturing it, you want to make sure to preserve it.
A lot of pictures and video we record these days is done on our phones or digital cameras. These devices record these moments and store them internally as data. We then transfer this data onto our home computer.
Our home computers usually have a lot of information stored on them. Along with the data we transfer from our phones or cameras, they may also store financial, medical or career information.
Computers do crash. What would happen to all that information if yours crashed? The easiest way to make sure all the information on your computer remains safe is to make a backup of it. One reliable way to do that is to use an external drive.
External drives are storage devices that connect to your computer by USB. They often contain built-in software to backup all the files and folders automatically. These devices are affordable, portable and can hold enormous amounts of data. This is probably the easiest way to make a backup of your computer.
The best advice is to visit your local computer store and talk to one of the computer specialists. Let them know if you have a Mac or PC and what kinds of files you want to back up. If you aren't sure about something, such as what a USB is or how to connect the external drive, be sure to ask them.
The peace of mind that comes from knowing all those memory-making moments are safely backed up is worth every dollar you'll spend. Next time, we'll explore another alternative for backing up information in "the cloud."
