Summer Vacation Tips

With the kids out of school, it's time for summer vacation. Whether you've planned a trip to Disneyworld, you're going camping in Beautiful British Columbia, or visiting somewhere close to home, here are some useful summer vacation tips.

Be ready for any type of weather. Make sure to pack rain gear and cool weather clothing.

Be prepared for an emergency and pack a basic emergency kit in your vehicle. Things to include: jumper cables, flashlight with new batteries, first aid kit, and your roadside assistance card.

Be sure to pack ample sun protection – it's an absolute necessity. Bring more than enough sunscreen for the whole family, and don't forget about sunglasses and sun hats.

Keep in mind that when you're selecting a sunscreen for the family, you want to have a couple choices available. You want basic sun screen that you can use daily and another that is very water resistant.

If the family is active in the water, you want to re-apply the sunscreen every 80 minutes for sunscreen labeled
"very water resistant" and every 40 minutes if the label reads "water resistant".

Summer vacations can be rich with memory making opportunities and so we wish you and your family a wonderful August!

Savoury Flavours & Cheap Eats

What is summer without some amazing food? Here's a special marinade recipe that is easy to whip up and will add extra flavour dimension to any meal.

Garlic & Herb Marinade – simple, flavour packed,
great for meat, chicken or fish.

You Need:
    6 garlic cloves, finely minced
1/3 cup fresh thyme sprigs, finely minced
1/4 cup fresh rosemary leaves, finely minced
    1 1/2 tablespoons coarse salt
    1 cup fresh lemon juice
    1 1/2 cups olive oil
fresh ground black pepper to taste

In a bowl, thoroughly whisk all ingredients together.
Marinade may be made 1 day ahead and chilled,
covered. Marinate meat for at least 30 minutes,
covered in the fridge.
Chicken and fish should
be marinated for less
than 15 minutes.

Save on Meats – Grilling on a Budget
Keep a cap on the grilling budget this summer with
these tips on buying meat.

Chicken: Buy bone-in pieces and remove the skin
yourself at home.

Hamburger & Steak: Buy family or club-store size and
freeze unused portions for the next BBQ.

Ribs: Skip the baby back and go for the pork sparerib
– they're delicious and less pricey.

A barbeque dinner can transform an ordinary evening into a magical feeling of a relaxing vacation. Happy Summer from all of us at Capital Direct!
