Time for Trick or Treat

Halloween can be a fun time for the family to enjoy together and especially if you have little ones to dress up. The family at Capital Direct want you to enjoy the celebrations and to be safe. Here are a few safety tips to make sure you have fun and stay safe while trick or treating.

  • Adult supervision is a must with younger children. It's great if you can go with neighbours or friends because then there are other adults to share in the supervision.
  • With older children that might want to go out with friends, make sure that you know where they plan to go and set a check-in time.
  • Make sure that your little monsters are highly visible. A little bit of reflective tape will help increase visibility, especially around dusk. Bringing a flashlight is a great idea.
  • Plan your costumes well in advance to avoid a mad rush at the last minute. This can be a really enjoyable activity for your children.
  • Get the whole family involved in decorating. You use black and orange craft paper and cut out scary shapes like bats and spiders.
  • Make sure to inspect your child's haul of treats. This also allows you to take inventory and ration out the sweets.
  • This can be an evening with lots of fun and memories to be made. Celebrate safely – Happy Halloween!

Immune Boosting
Orange Smoothie

Smoothies are a great way to kick off the day for the family and this simple 4-ingredient smoothie is both packed with nutrition and loaded with delicious flavour.

What you'll need:
  • 1 cup loosely packed sweet potato puree (~1 large potato), skin removed (or substitute pumpkin puree + extra banana or maple syrup for sweetness)
  • 1 medium ripe banana, previously sliced and frozen
  • 1 Tbsp almond butter (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp each ground turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger
(if using fresh ginger, use 1 tsp chopped)
  • 1/2 Tbsp flaxseed meal or chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/4 cup orange juice (optional)
  • Large handful ice

How you'll prepare it:
To bake your sweet potato, preheat oven
to 400 degrees F and split in half lengthwise.
Lightly oil and place face down on a foil-lined baking sheet. Bake until soft - 25-30 minutes.

Or, to steam, place in a steamer basket over 2 inches of simmering water and cover to steam for roughly 5-10 minutes or until fork tender. Let cool slightly before adding to blender.

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth, scraping down sides as needed.

Taste and adjust seasonings/sweetness as needed. Add more banana or orange for added sweetness, and more ice to thicken.

Split between two small glasses and serve. Garnish with extra cinnamon.

Skip Flu Season

With fall also comes the cold and flu season. Here are some preventative measures you can take to keep you and the family healthy and flu free.

  • First you need to know whether it is a cold or the flu. Common cold symptoms are a runny nose, sneezing, coughing and fatigue. The flu has the same symptoms but more intense, and typically will come with a fever, more coughing and more muscle aches and pains.
  • Wash your hands. It’s a very simple thing to do and one of the most powerful defenses you have against the flu. Use warm water and soap! It’s that simple.
  • With plenty of rest, a well-balanced diet, and some regular exercise you can dramatically boost your immune system. It also decreases your stress level. This is also a good time to cut back on unhealthy habits that will work against your immune system.

Good People

“Manny is fantastic to deal with,” says Jason of Burlington, ON. He goes on to say, “Everyone was easy to work with. They were fast and are just good people to deal with.” When Jason was looking to solve his financial situation, the Capital Direct team found a solution that fit his needs.
