back to basics

“If you have your health, you have everything,” it's an expression you've probably heard before. Having good health is a fundamental key to leading a satisfying and fulfilling life.

Here are two basic principles to a healthier life.

Eating nutritiously is the most valuable thing you can do to improve your health; it increases your energy and raises your feeling of well-being.

Simple strategies for eating healthier:

  • Check nutrition facts on food labels. Choose foods lower in saturated and trans fats, sugar and sodium.
  • Eat a variety of colourful, fresh vegetables.
  • Try eating trout or salmon twice a week; fish is a great substitute to red meat.

Staying physical significantly impacts the quality of your health by reducing stress levels and improving sleep.

Everyday activities for improving health:

  • Light - 60 minutes a day of easy walking, gardening, stretching or yoga.
  • Moderate - 30 – 60 minutes a day of brisk walking, bike riding, swimming or dancing.
  • Vigorous – 20 – 30 minutes a day of jogging, hiking, soccer or weight lifting.

Grill'n Time

The barbeque is a fantastic way to cook easy and delicious meals. If you need to purchase a new unit this season, here a few points to consider.

Burners produce the heat and are the most important part of a good unit. Stainless steel is the most popular and the best for resisting the extreme heat and corrosion. The average stainless steel burner will come with a 5-year warranty. The life of your burner is dependent upon how well it is protected from food acid and drippings.

Heat diffusers absorb and retain heat from the burner, redirecting it to the cooking surface. Most systems are made up of a series of V-shape bars, ceramic rods or a cast-iron plate. The most important consideration is how well the system directs food drippings away from the burner, protecting it from corrosion.

Cooking surfaces have three equally good choices: raw cast-iron, porcelain coated cast-iron and stainless steel. Cast-iron requires a little more care and attention to prohibit corrosion, but it can’t be beat when it comes to those luscious grill lines on a perfect steak.

Take your time when making a decision and find a sales associate who can explain the differences between makes and models.

Happy Mother's Day

May 10th is Mother's Day. It was in 1912 that Anna Jarvis coined the phrase, "Mother's Day", creating the Mother's Day International Association.

“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around
outside your body.”

Elizabeth Stone

Whether you give your mother flowers, write her a heartfelt poem or make her brunch, take the time to let her know just how much she really means too you.
