Pro Gardener's Tips

Watering regularly and optimally is one of the key tips for gardeners, so here are 3 tips to keep your garden hydrated and thriving this summer.

1. Know Your Tools
Soaker hoses and sprinkler wands do a much better job for getting the water where you want it. A garden hose and nozzle is the least efficient way of watering your garden and can end up with more wasted water.

2. Rise & Shine
A great rule-of-thumb is to water in the morning. Watering while it's cool outside allows water to soak in before it evaporates on the surface. If you do it in the morning, that helps the garden to take up the water throughout the day.

3. Don't Waste Water
Water the plant's root system, not the leaves or flowers. Keep the water in the 'root zone' and the plant will make best use of it.

Health & Happiness

Our overall wellbeing is directly linked to our health and physical wellbeing. A few days of being 'under the weather' and you will quickly realize how much it means to be healthy.

A balanced diet and regular physical activity are great ways to controlling your wellbeing. Increased energy, more restful sleep, a stronger immune system and even healthier skin are some of the benefits of maintaining a proper diet and regular physical activity.

Here are a couple tips that will help you on your way to a healthier and happier day.

1. Go for a walk. Just 20 minutes of brisk walking will exercise your cardiovascular system.

2. Eat healthy and 'clean' foods, such as a smoothie. Here's a great smoothie recipe, perfect for the summer:

Peaches & Cream
1 cup of milk (we like Silk Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk)
1 large peach
½ cup non-fat vanilla yogurt
1 Tbsp honey
Dash of cinnamon
A few ice cubes
Blend until smooth and enjoy!

Save More Day-to-Day

Mid-year is a great time to revisit the family budget and identify any areas where you can save a little more. Everything you save can be used towards your financial goals, such as topping up your RRSP or enhancing your family vacation.

Here are some tips for saving extra money around the home.

Turn Out The Lights
Turn off lights when they're not needed. Not just when you're not in a room, but also when there is enough natural light that you don't really need them to be on. Use energy efficient bulbs.
Turn The Air-Con Off
If you're not going to be around the home for extended periods then make sure the air conditioning is turned off and not set to auto.
Use Sponges and Rags
For the day-to-day cleaning or to wipe up spills, use sponges and rags. Not only are they reusable, they can save you quite a bit of money. Paper towel is convenient, but it can quickly be used up and add to your monthly budget.

It's easy to think we'll save money by making a dramatic cut in our spending or a change to our lifestyle. The truth is it rarely works. Small, incremental changes to you spending can have a tremendous long-term impact.
