Summer Safety for the Kids

Summer is in full swing! Here are some tips to help keep your kids safe this summer.

Water
Drinking enough water and staying well hydrated during hot summer days is crucial. This can't be more critical than with children. Kids are often much more active than adults, and they can easily become dehydrated in the hotter weather of summer.

To replenish your family's fluid levels, make sure to give everyone lots of water and enrich your meals with high-liquid-content foods.

Increase their fluid intake by:

  • Supply them with water throughout the day. Give them their own water bottles and make sure they keep them topped up.
  • Encourage them to eat fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks. These snacks are high in water content, and they're full of fibre, vitamins and minerals.
  • Add foods like salads, which are rich in water, to your meals.
  • Offer special treats like a delicious fruit smoothie. See our Pineapple Coco-Mint recipe in this issue of balance.
  • Sunscreen
Sunscreen plays an important role in helping to keep your children safe during the summer.

  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside.
  • Generously apply UVA and UVB blocking sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, and more often if the kids are playing in water.
  • Use sunscreen even on cloudy days. UVA rays can still cause damage through the clouds.
  • The harmful rays from the sun can also reflect off of the sand, water, and other reflective surfaces. Dress kids in protective clothing when possible, and have them wear hats with wide brims as well as sunglasses - this is also very helpful at preventing UV damage.

    Extra tips:
If your child is playing outdoors in the summer:

  • Let them take regular breaks from being outdoors, especially during the hotter midday hours.
  • Encourage them to play in shaded areas whenever possible.
  • Sprinkle water on their heads, or use a spray bottle to help keep them cool.

  • Actually, these tips are equally good for everyone in the family, no matter their age.

We hope that you are having an awesome
    summer and enjoying time
    with family and friends.
