Beaches and Lakes Worth the Drive

August is peak water season—the brief window where everything from ocean beaches to inland lakes becomes the main destination. And the best part is how much variety you can find without leaving the country. On the freshwater beach side, Sandbanks

Provincial Park in Ontario is hard to beat, with its wide stretches of soft sand and surprisingly warm, shallow water. Wasaga Beach offers a classic summer scene with one of the longest freshwater beaches in the world, while Grand Bend brings more of a lively, small beach-town energy along Lake Huron. On the East Coast, Parlee Beach in New Brunswick stands out for its unusually warm saltwater swimming.

If lakes are more your style, Canada delivers some of its most iconic summer views. Lake Louise in Alberta is breathtakingly blue, though brisk—more of a “dip and admire” situation than a long swim. Nearby Moraine Lake is equally striking. In British Columbia, Okanagan Lake offers a warmer, more relaxed swimming experience with beach access in towns like Kelowna and Penticton, while Shuswap Lake is known for long, lazy summer days on the water.

Even within cities, there are easy escapes. Vancouver’s Kitsilano Beach, Toronto’s Cherry Beach, and Montreal’s island beaches at Parc Jean-Drapeau all offer accessible summer swims without the long drive.

From coastline to inland lakes, Canada’s swimming season is short—but wide open while it lasts.

The Things You’re Not Protecting from the Sun
(But Probably Should Be)

Sun protection isn’t just about skin—it’s about everything that quietly sits in it all summer long.

Your furniture is quietly fading. Sunlight through windows can bleach sofas, rugs, and wood finishes over time. Do this instead: Rotate furniture occasionally and use light curtains, blinds, or UV window film in high-exposure rooms.

Your houseplants are getting too much of a good thing. Direct summer sun can scorch leaves or dry ou t soil faster than expected. Do this instead: Move sensitive plants slightly back from windows or rotate them weekly to balance light exposure.

Your car interior is aging faster than you think. Heat and UV can crack dashboards and fade upholstery. Do this instead: Use a windshield sunshade and park in shade whenever possible—it makes a noticeable difference over time.

Your home overheats in ways you don’t always notice. It’s not just comfort—electronics, pets, and even sleep quality are affected. Do this instead: Close blinds during peak sun hours and create airflow cross-ventilation in the cooler parts of the day.

Natural light isn’t always neutral. That bright, sunny window is also slowly affecting everything in its path. Do this instead: Rearrange high-value or sentimental items away from direct sun zones.

Lighter Ways to Enjoy Cold, Sweet Summer Drinks

Not every summer craving needs to be eliminated—most just need a small adjustment. Small shifts can add up quickly, especially when the goal is still enjoyment, not restriction. Ask for “half sweet” at cafés. Many iced coffees, cold brews, and flavoured drinks come pre-loaded with syrup. Reducing sweetness by 25–50% keeps the flavour but cuts unnecessary sugar.

Choose alternative milks wisely. Unsweetened oat, almond, or soy milk can significantly reduce added sugars compared to flavoured creamers or sweetened dairy options.

Make smoothies at home instead of buying them. Store-bought smoothies often contain added syrups or juice concentrates. Homemade versions let you control fruit, add fibre (like spinach or chia), and skip hidden sugars.

Use flavour instead of sugar. Mint, citrus, cucumber, and berries can make water, iced tea, or sparkling drinks feel more interesting without sweetening them.

Swap soda for “zero-effort spritzes.” Sparkling water with lime, lemon, or a splash of juice can satisfy the fizzy craving with far less sugar than traditional soft drinks.

Freeze your cravings. If you want something cold and sweet, frozen fruit (like grapes or berries) or blended ice-based drinks can satisfy the same “cold treat” impulse without the sugar spike of store-bought beverages.
