Don’t Get Scammed: 5 Red Flags Homeowners Should Know
Homeownership comes with plenty of responsibilities — and unfortunately, scammers know it. From fake contractors to convincing emails, scams targeting homeowners can take many forms. Knowing what to watch for can help protect both your home and your finances.
1. The “urgent” home repair
Someone shows up unexpectedly claiming your roof, driveway or another part of your home needs immediate attention. Be cautious of anyone pressuring you to agree to work on the spot. Get a second opinion and, whenever possible, choose a contractor you’ve researched yourself.
2. The too-good-to-be-true contractor
An unusually low quote can be tempting, but it may come with hidden costs — or no completed work at all. Get a detailed written estimate, check references and avoid paying the full amount upfront.
3. The fake government message
Scammers may impersonate the Canada Revenue Agency, Service Canada or other government organizations, asking for personal information or payment. Government agencies generally won’t demand immediate payment through unusual methods or threaten you with arrest.
4. The mortgage or loan offer you didn’t ask for
Be wary of unexpected calls, texts or emails promising guaranteed approval, unusually low rates or quick access to funds. Never provide banking or identification information until you’ve independently verified who you’re dealing with.
5. The phishing message
A text or email may appear to come from your bank, utility company or another familiar organization. Before clicking a link or sharing information, contact the organization directly using a phone number or website you know is legitimate.
When in doubt, slow down. A legitimate company won’t mind if you take time to verify an offer—and a few extra minutes of caution could save you considerably more down the road.
