Here's to Your Health

There's a saying that if you have your health you have everything and a healthy family is a happy family. Being in good health empowers you to enjoy life to the fullest.

Here are two basic principles to a healthier life.

Eat nutritiously. This is the most valuable thing you can do to improve your health. Healthy eating increases your energy and feeling of well-being.
Simple strategies for eating healthier:

  • Check nutritional facts on food labels and choose foods lower in sodium, fat, and sugar.
  • Eat a wide selection of fresh vegetables - keep it colourful.
  • Now and again eat fish in place of red meat.

Keep moving. Physical activity significantly improves the quality of your health, and it also improves your sleeping.
Everyday activities for improving health:

  • Light: 60 minutes a day of easy walking, gardening, stretching or yoga.
  • Moderate: 30 – 60 minutes a day of brisk walking, bike riding, swimming or dancing.
  • Vigorous: 20 – 30 minutes a day of jogging, hiking, soccer or weight lifting.

A balanced diet and regular physical activity are the keys to obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. There are other benefits to maintaining a proper diet and regular physical activity:

  • Increased energy
  • More restful sleep
  • Healthier skin
  • Stronger immune system

Eat right, keep fit. Your overall happiness is directly linked to your overall health. Life is much more enjoyable when we feel good. This summer, eat healthy, get outside and discover what wonders await!

Have a Berry Good Summer

Salads can be one of the most delicious and nutritious side or main dishes you can serve. Summer is the season for salads, with fresh produce easily available. Here is a simple recipe for a berry and goat cheese salad.

Ingredients:
Salad
1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 tablespoon canola oil
8 cups (about 12 ounces) spring lettuce mix
1/4 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
1/2 cup yellow grape tomatoes, halved
1 cup mixed seasonal berries, such as strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries
4 ounces goat cheese, crumbled

Vinaigrette
2 tablespoons raspberry or sherry vinegar
1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
Salt and pepper
1/4 cup canola oil

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Toss onion with canola oil and a dash of salt and pepper. Roast until onion is soft and lightly browned on a rimmed baking sheet, 15 to 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

Toss lettuce, walnuts, tomatoes, berries and goat cheese in a large serving bowl.

For the vinaigrette, whisk together vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, salt and pepper. Drizzle in the oil while continuing to whisk, until vinaigrette slightly thickens. Taste and adjust seasoning. Drizzle dressing over salad, add red onion and toss to combine. Serve immediately
