Fun in the Sun

For many of us across the country, summer has arrived with force. Depending on where you live, we've already had some very sunny days. Here are a few tips for making sure that your fun outside doesn't turn into a nasty sunburn.

Recommended top 3 sunscreen tips:
For adults, use at least a SPF 30.
For children, use a sunscreen with vitamin E and at least a SPF 45.
For children and babies, use at least an SPF 50.

Key points to remember:
Don't rely on sunscreen alone.
Make sure your sunscreen is waterproof.
Reapply sunscreen about every 2 hours.
Reapply sunscreen after swimming.

While the sun is key to life on earth, too much exposure can have negative effects, like sunburn. In time, overexposure could lead to conditions such as skin cancer. It's important to take the steps to protect yourself and especially your children.

The Right Foot Foward

Studies have shown that children do better in school when they've had breakfast. Even with school out for the summer break, it doesn't take much to realize that adults,just like children, will feel and perform better after eating a healthy breakfast.

Skipping breakfast happens for too many reasons: we're running late, need to take care of the kids, etc. Some people even use skipping breakfast as a strategy for losing weight. In fact, having breakfast is great for weight loss. Studies show that people who eat breakfast maintain a healthier weight.

A healthy breakfast each day doesn't have to be complicated or time consuming. It can be as simple as a bowl of high fibre cereal, or some fruit with yoghurt. If that's not to your liking, you could boil a couple of eggs and have them with multi-grain toast. The key to a healthy breakfast is to include some protein and some fibre.

Marinating meat before grilling is a special way to add extra flavour to a dish.

Garlic & Herb Marinade
simple and flavor-packed, it's great for meat, chicken or fish.

You Need:
6 garlic cloves finely minced
1/3 cup fresh thyme sprigs, finely minced
1/4 cup fresh rosemary leaves, finely minced
1 1/2 tablespoons coarse salt
1 cup fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 cups olive oil
fresh ground black pepper to taste

In a bowl, thoroughly whisk all ingredients together. Marinade may be made 1 day ahead and chilled, covered. Marinate meat for at least 30 minutes, covered in the fridge. Chicken
and fish
should be
marinated
for less than 15 minutes.

Buy bone-in pieces and remove the skin yourself at home.

Hamburger & Steak
Buy family or club-store size and freeze unused portions for the next BBQ.

Ribs
